Wise, Isaac Mayer

American Reform leader. He was born in Steingrub, Bohemia, and emigrated to the US in 1846. He served as rabbi of Congregation Beth El in Albany, then in 1854 became minister of a congregation in Cincinnati. He founded an English-language weekly, The Israelite, and a German-language weekly, Die Deborah; he also published an American Reform prayerbook, Minhag America. In 1855 he attempted to found a rabbinical seminary, Zion College; though he was unsuccessful at that time he was later a prime mover in the establishing of the Hebrew Union College in 1875. He summoned rabbinic conferences in 1869 and 1871, helped to form the Union of American Hebrew Congregations in 1873, and in 1889 organized the Central Conference of American Rabbis.
